Fire Damage
Fire Damage Causes Swimming Pool Shutdown
Inverness families looking forward to spending a fun-filled weekend together should strike out the Inverness Aquadome from their list of possible destinations. Some scheduled activities and bookings have been canceled by the Inverness Leisure Aquadome authorities following last Saturday’s fire on the recreation site. The operating income from visitors is one of the major losses wrought by fire damage to the facilities. The enormity of restoration of the fire damage is yet to be assessed, but some Aquadome facilities may be out of action for a considerable amount of time.
Last Saturday, as hundreds of people relaxed, swum and hung out in the Aquadome, they were hurriedly evacuated from the site when the fire broke out from the plant room. Aquadome staff immediately executed emergency procedures and hurried everyone out of the area, some still in their swimsuits, in a fast, calm and professional manner. The Aquadome personnel were later sited for their competent actions that minimized potential fire damage. The evacuees were ushered into the nearest safe place, the Floral Hall, before they were eventually led to the First Monster challenge race around Loch Ness marquee. No one was hurt in the incident, and everybody’s possessions had been accounted for.
A control panel for an artificial wave machine short-circuited and is believed to have started the fire. The wave machine is one among many other fun features boasted by the Aquadome. A preliminary assessment of the actual fire damage revealed that not only was the plant room damaged, there was also substantial fire residues left on surfaces in other areas of the site. Aside from the wave pool, the Aquadome also offers flumes, a toddler pool, a spa relaxation pool and a competitions swimming pool for serious swimmers. All of these sustained fire damage in one form or another. Smoke permeated many parts of the Aquadome and recreation authorities foresee considerable clean-up efforts in the pool halls. The affected buildings are large-sized and will need the aid of experts and specialized equipments.
Meanwhile, the Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service has begun its investigation to ascertain the actual cause of the blaze. Inverness Leisure, the operators of Aquadome, now waits for its insurers to provide expert assessment of the fire damage.
The Aquadome General Manager James Martin announced the suspension of some parts of the facilities services until the fire damage has been well-assessed and restored. He implored for customer understanding as Aquadome cancelled booked events for a certain period of time. Because of the fire rescue operations, many facilities have been wetted down, and only the dry side of the facility – the gym – did not sustain severe fire damage. The gym facilities therefore remain open to patrons.
The most important feature of the recreation site, the competitions pool, will be inaccessible, and in this aspect fire damage has been the greatest in terms of financial loss. The 25-meter competition pool accommodates swimming lessons, many school and group bookings. Now it seems the pool will be out of commission until October.
